Sell Privately, Trade In or Sell for Cash? An Honest Guide for White Rock Car Owners

There are three main ways to sell a car in White Rock: a private sale, a dealer trade in, or a cash buyer like us. A private sale can bring the most money for a car in good shape, but it takes the most time and effort. A trade in is easy but only works when you buy another car. A cash buyer is the fastest and easiest choice, especially for older, damaged or non running cars.

Option 1: Selling Your Car Privately

The Good

A private sale often brings the highest price for a car that runs well, looks good and is in demand. You set the price and choose who to sell to.

The Downsides

  • Time: you need to clean the car, take photos, write the ad and post it on websites.
  • Calls and messages: you answer the same questions many times, often from people who never show up.
  • Viewings and test drives: strangers come to your home, and you need to ride along on test drives.
  • Haggling: many buyers try to lower the price at the last minute.
  • Payment risk: you need to be sure the payment is real before you hand over the keys.
  • Damaged or non running cars: very few private buyers want them.

Who It Suits

A private sale is a good choice if your car is in good condition, you are not in a hurry and you are comfortable dealing with buyers.

Private Sale Safety Tips

  • Meet in daylight, in a public place if possible.
  • Check the buyer’s driver’s licence before a test drive.
  • Never hand over the keys or paperwork until payment is complete and confirmed.
  • Complete the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) fully with the buyer and keep your copy.
  • Remove your plates before the buyer drives away.

Option 2: Trading In at a Dealer

The Good

A trade in is simple. You drive your old car to the dealer, and its value comes off the price of the car you are buying. The dealer handles the paperwork.

The Downsides

  • Lower value: dealers need to resell the car for a profit, so trade in offers are usually lower than a private sale.
  • Only when buying: a trade in only works if you are buying another vehicle from that dealer.
  • Not for every car: many dealers offer very little for older, high kilometre or damaged cars, or do not take them at all.
  • The car must get there: you need to drive it to the dealer, which is not possible if it does not run.

Who It Suits

A trade in suits you if you are buying a newer car from a dealer and your current car runs and is in decent condition.

Option 3: Selling to a Cash Buyer

The Good

  • Fast: you can often sell the same day. With us, most pickups happen within 3 to 4 hours, depending on distance and workload.
  • Easy: one call or form. No ads, no strangers and no test drives.
  • Any condition: running, damaged, written off by ICBC or not starting at all.
  • We come to you: free pickup most of the time with our own trucks.
  • Paperwork handled together: we fill in the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form with you at pickup.
  • Paid on the spot: cash or Interac transfer before we leave.

The Downsides

  • Not always the top dollar: for a car in excellent condition, a private sale may bring more money if you have the time.
  • Choose carefully: not every cash buyer is local or honest. Pick an established business with a real address and clear offers. Read our guide on how to spot a cash for cars scam.

Who It Suits

A cash buyer suits you if you want the car gone quickly, your car is older, damaged or not running, or you simply do not want the hassle of a private sale.

What You Need for Any Sale in BC

No matter how you sell, the paperwork in BC is much the same:

  • Photo ID
  • The vehicle registration, signed by the registered owner
  • A completed ICBC Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) with original signatures on all four pages
  • Your licence plates removed
  • Your Autoplan coverage cancelled or moved at an Autoplan broker after the sale

When you sell to us, we fill in the transfer form with you at pickup. The vehicle must be fully cleared, with no money owing, and if you sell for someone else you need proper legal authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to sell my car privately or to a cash buyer?

It depends on your car and your time. A private sale can bring more money for a car in good shape if you are willing to spend days or weeks selling it. A cash buyer is faster and easier, and is often the only real choice for damaged, written off or non running cars.

Will a dealer take my old car as a trade in?

Many dealers take running cars in decent condition when you buy from them. Older, high kilometre and damaged cars often get very low offers or are not accepted.

How fast can I sell my car to a cash buyer?

With us, most pickups happen within 3 to 4 hours of accepting the offer, depending on distance and workload. You get paid before we leave.

Do I need different paperwork for each option?

No. In BC, every sale uses photo ID, the signed registration and the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T). Remove your plates and cancel or move your Autoplan coverage after the sale.

Should I fix my car before selling it?

Usually not, if you are selling to a cash buyer. We buy cars as they are, and the cost of fixing is often more than the extra value it adds.
