Seller Checklist
BC sale- Photo ID that matches the name on the registration
- Vehicle registration, signed by the registered owner
- Keys, if you have them
- Licence plates, removed or ready to remove
- Proof the vehicle is clear, if a loan was recently paid off
- Legal authority documents, if you are selling for someone else
The Paperwork When You Sell
Six simple steps that protect you after the vehicle is gone.
- Step 1
Check the Registration
Your vehicle registration is part of your ICBC papers. The name on it must match the person selling. If two people own the vehicle together, both owners need to sign.
- Step 2
Bring Photo ID
We check that your photo ID matches the name on the registration. This protects you and us.
- Step 3
Fill In the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T)
We fill it in with you at pickup. All four pages need original signatures from the seller and the buyer. Keep the seller’s copy. It is your proof the vehicle was sold and who bought it.
- Step 4
Remove Your Licence Plates
Take your plates off before the vehicle leaves. In BC, plates belong to ICBC, not to the vehicle. Keep them for your next vehicle, or return them to an Autoplan broker.
- Step 5
Cancel or Move Your Autoplan Coverage
After the sale, visit an Autoplan broker with your plates and papers. Cancel the coverage on the vehicle you sold, or move it to another vehicle.
- Step 6
Get Paid
Once the paperwork is signed, we pay you in cash or by Interac transfer before we load the vehicle and leave.
When Your Situation Is Different
Not every sale is simple. Here is how we handle the most common special cases.
The Vehicle Still Has a Loan on It
We cannot buy a vehicle with money owing on it. Pay off the loan first and make sure the lender has released its claim. Then contact us.
You Lost Your Registration
We need the registration to buy the vehicle. Ask an Autoplan broker how to get a replacement before you sell.
Selling for a Family Member
If the vehicle is not in your name, you need proper legal authority, such as a signed power of attorney. Otherwise the registered owner must be there to sign.
Selling a Vehicle From an Estate
The person handling the estate needs to show legal authority for the vehicle. ICBC has a page explaining the steps. Read our estate and family car page.
Selling a Business Vehicle
The person signing must have authority to sell the vehicle for the business.
An ICBC Write Off or Salvage Branded Vehicle
If it is still in your name, you can sell it to us with the same paperwork. If ICBC has already taken ownership, it is no longer yours to sell. See damaged car buyers.

After the Sale: Protect Yourself
- Keep your copy of the Transfer/Tax Form in a safe place
- Keep or return your plates. Never leave them on the vehicle
- Visit your Autoplan broker to cancel or move your coverage
- Check for personal items: garage remotes, parking passes, toll tags and glovebox papers
- Clear your phone from the car’s Bluetooth system

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to sell my car in BC?

What is the APV9T form?
The APV9T is ICBC’s Transfer/Tax Form. It moves the vehicle out of the seller’s name and into the buyer’s. All four pages need original signatures. We fill it in with you at pickup.
What do I do with my licence plates after selling my car?
Remove them before the vehicle leaves. Plates belong to ICBC. Keep them for your next vehicle or return them to an Autoplan broker.
Do I need to cancel my Autoplan after selling my car?
Yes. Visit an Autoplan broker after the sale to cancel the coverage on the vehicle you sold or move it to another vehicle.
Can I sell a car that still has a loan on it?
Not to us. The vehicle must be fully cleared. Pay off the loan first and make sure the lender has released its claim, then contact us.
Can I sell my parent’s car?
Only if you have proper legal authority to sell it, or if your parent, as the registered owner, signs the paperwork.
Can I sell a car from an estate?
Yes, if the person handling the estate can show legal authority for the vehicle. ICBC explains the steps on its page for when a vehicle owner has passed away.
Do both owners need to sign?
