How to Spot a Cash for Cars Scam in BC

Most cash for car buyers are honest, but some are not. The most common problems are a big offer that drops for no clear reason at pickup, surprise fees, payment that never arrives and paperwork left incomplete. A real buyer has a local address, explains how the offer is worked out, fills in the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form with you and pays you before the vehicle leaves.

Why Sellers Get Caught Out

When you need a car gone quickly, it is easy to say yes to the first big number you hear. Some buyers count on that. They promise a high price on the phone, then change the deal when the truck is already in your driveway and you feel you have no choice.

Knowing the warning signs before you call anyone protects your money, your time and your personal details.

10 Red Flags to Watch For

1

A Price That Sounds Too Good

Big “up to” numbers in ads are the best case for the best vehicle. If a buyer promises a very high price without asking about the condition or seeing photos, be careful.

2

A Big Price Drop at Pickup With No Reason

A fair buyer bases the offer on the details and photos you share. If something is truly different at pickup, they should show you what changed and explain it clearly before anything is signed. Be wary of a buyer who drops the price a lot for vague reasons once they arrive.

3

Surprise Fees

Watch for towing fees, “admin” fees or fuel charges that were never mentioned on the phone. Ask about any fees before you agree.

4

No Real Address

Some companies advertise in many cities but have no real local office. Look for a business with a real address you can find on Google Maps and a Google Business Profile with genuine reviews.

5

Your Call Gets Passed On

Some websites only collect your details and pass them to whoever pays for the lead. You may get calls from companies you never contacted. Ask who will actually come to pick up the car.

6

They Don’t Check Ownership

An honest buyer checks your photo ID and registration. A buyer who does not care who owns the car may not be running an honest business.

7

They Skip the Transfer Form

In BC, the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) moves the vehicle out of your name. If the buyer will not fill it in with you, or asks you to sign a blank form, say no. Without it, you could stay linked to the vehicle after it leaves.

8

Payment “Later”

A buyer who promises to send the money tomorrow, or after the vehicle is “checked at the shop”, is a big risk. Get paid before the vehicle leaves.

9

Fake Payment Proof

A screenshot of a transfer is not proof of payment. Check that the money has actually arrived in your bank account before you hand over the keys.

10

Pressure to Decide Now

“This price is only good for the next 10 minutes” is a pressure tactic. An honest buyer gives you time to think.

How to Protect Yourself When You Sell

  1. 1

Get the offer in writing. A text or email with the offer and any conditions is useful.

  2. 2

Send clear, honest photos. An accurate description means an accurate offer.

  3. 3

Ask about fees. “Is pickup free? Are there any other charges?”

  4. 4

Check the business. Look for a real address, a Google Business Profile and reviews.

  5. 5

Keep your copy of the Transfer/Tax Form. It is your proof the vehicle was sold.

  6. 6

Remove your plates. Plates belong to ICBC. Never leave them on the vehicle.

  7. 7

Confirm payment. Count the cash or check that the Interac transfer is in your account.

  8. 8

Cancel or move your Autoplan coverage at an Autoplan broker after the sale.

  9. 9

Remove personal items and clear your phone from the car’s Bluetooth system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are cash for cars companies legit?

Many are honest local businesses, but some are not. Look for a real local address, genuine reviews, a clear explanation of the offer, no surprise fees, the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form filled in with you and payment before the vehicle leaves.

Why did the buyer lower the price when they arrived?

A fair buyer only changes the offer when the vehicle is truly different from the photos or description, and explains the change before anything is signed. If the price drops a lot for no clear reason, you can say no.

Should I sign a blank transfer form?

No. Always fill in the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) completely with the buyer and keep your copy.

How do I know a payment is real?

Count cash in front of the buyer. For an Interac transfer, check that the money is in your bank account before you hand over the keys. A screenshot is not proof.

What should I do with my plates?

Remove them before the vehicle leaves. Keep them for your next vehicle or return them to an Autoplan broker.
